Wythenshawe Town exits Manchester Premier Cup

Wythenshawe Town’s journey in the Manchester Premier Cup fell short after a hard-fought defeat against Ashton United in the quarter-final, writes Christian James.

Wythenshawe Town faced Ashton United following a league defeat against Bootle. They couldn’t redeem themselves after that loss as they exited the Manchester Premier Cup with a 2-1 defeat.

On paper, Ashton United were the favourites going into the match, competing one tier above Wythenshawe Town. Wythenshawe Town also had to play away from home, making the task of advancing to the semi-finals even harder.

Wythy Town’s coach Chris Willcock named a full-strength starting XI for this match. Wythy Town started the match strongly, as they kept pressuring Ashton United’s defense. The visitors efforts paid off, they struck first with a goal from Domaine Rouse in the 17th minute. Ashton United felt like they were awakened from sleep by Wyhty Town. It didn’t take long for Ashton United to equalise, as they scored in the 23rd minute.

There were no further goals in the first half after the equaliser. Wythy Town began the second half with a triple substitution. They wanted to attack Ashton United’s defense with fresh legs. Both teams were trying their best to threaten each other’s defense but there were not many chances happened in the second half, until Ashton United scored in the 73rd minute. Ashton United managed to find some space to scored the winning goal.

Despite fighting until the final whistle, Wythy Town couldn’t find another goal to keep themselves in the cup. Ashton United managed to close the game well and secure their place in the Manchester Premier Cup semi-finals.

It was a hard-fought battle from Wythy Town but their Manchester Premier Cup run had to end. This defeat marked their second loss in a row across all competitions.

Wythy Town now have to turn their focus back to the league. Their next match will be against Clitheroe FC in Matchday 27 of the Northern Premier League on January 17, 2026 away from home. This won’t be an easy game for Wythy Town, but they have to show their fighting spirit to have a chance in this game.
