FC United of Manchester awarded Adam Le Fondre a trophy for his 300th career goal, writes Jovan Radjawane.
FC United’s win against Ilkeston Town at the end of November was an emotion boost for the team. Not only did they end a winless run, it was also the moment Adam Le Fondre (Alfie) scored his 300th career goal. The club didn’t just congratulate him on social media, they also presented him a trophy to commemorate his achievement.
Twenty-one years ago, Le Fondre made his debut for Stockport County, his hometown club. He played there until January 2007. Alfie was loaned to Rochdale for a short spell before The Dale signed him permanently of summer that year. Rochdale would not be his last club. For the next eleven years, Le Fondre played for four English clubs (Rotherham United, Reading, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic), and one Welsh club (Cardiff City).

Le Fondre has competed in the Premier League before. In 2012, he played a vital role in helping Reading won the Championship, which meant he also assisted Reading being promoted to the top-tier of the English league.
However, Reading only stayed for one season, as they were relegated after finished in 19th place. In an interview with The Club podcast, Le Fondre had a mixed opinion about his time as a Premier League player. According to him, Premier League is not as tough or as physical as the Championship, but he was aware that his club wouldn’t stay longer in the top flight due to lack of financial power.
After years of playing in UK, he moved to the other side of the world in 2018. Alfie signed for one of the top clubs in the Australian top flight, Sydney FC. There is no doubt that he is regarded as a legend in Australia. Other than helping FC Sydney win two Championships and one Premiership, Alfie remains the second-highest goalscorer in the club’s history.
Australia was not the only place outside the UK where Le Fondre left his mark. on October 2020, he was loaned for to Mumbai City for a season. Alfie won two trophies in India and was considered one of the key players for the club’s success that year.
In 2023, he returned to the UK. Before joining FC United of Manchester, Alfie was playing for Hibernian for a year. He scored five goals for the Edinburgh-based club and also made three appearance in Europa Conference League qualifiers.
Le Fondre signed for FC United in summer of 2024. He scored 17 goals from 46 appearances for the club in his first season, making him FC United’s top scorer last season. It’s also one of the main reason why he was awarded Player of the Season in his first season with FC United’s shirt. Right Now, Alfie has gathered eight goals in this season and remains the squad’s topscorer for a now.
Three days after the match against Ilkeston Town, Alfie turned 39. Despite being almost 40, there is no sign that he is planning to hang up his boots. It;s fair to say that Adam le Fondre is the epitome of the phrase “age is just a number”.
