Poor performance at Southend handed Altrincham first loss under Gibson

Altrincham’s unbeaten run has come to an end after a poor performance against Southend United cost them their first National League defeat under interim manager Neil Gibson on Saturday, writes Adhi Prasetya.

The Robins lost 3-0 at Roots Hall but there were positives including goalkeeper Luke Hutchinson’s brilliant save to deny Gus Scott-Morriss’ penalty in the second-half. However, this poor result dropped them to 15th with 23 points, while Southend sits in 7th with 35 points.

Everything went wrong for Alty from the beginning. They conceded nine minutes into the game after Oli Coker maximised the loose ball inside the visitors’ box with a volley into the bottom of the right corner past Hutchinson.

The hosts managed to double their lead ten minutes later. Alty’s Tylor Golden tried to head the ball out of the box, but Nathan Ralph was in the right place to get the ball and score the goal with his long-range effort, which went past Hutchinson’s legs.

Alty tried to show their fight with Matty Kosylo’s shot from the edge of the box in the 40th minute, but it didn’t find the target.

Southend had a chance to add to their lead in the second-half as Joe Gubbins’ shot from close range in the 52nd minute hit Dan Sassi’s upper arm, and referee Harry Wager had no choice but to point to the spot. Scott-Morriss stepped up to take the shot, but Hutchinson responded with a full-length dive to his bottom left to turn the ball away.

However, the situation worsened for Alty in the final minutes of the game. Sassi was sent off in the 86th minute following a reckless challenge on Harry Boyes, and Southend got their third two minutes later after Josh Walker capitalised on Alty’s defence error with a simple finish inside the box to seal a 3-0 victory.

Alty will be back in action next Saturday as they host Scunthorpe United at The J.Davidson Stadium.
