Ashton United once again proved their solid performance by silencing Ilkeston at their home ground on Satuday. Despite fielding a makeshift squad, writes Bramantyo Cronousbram.
The Robins managed to bring home a 2-0 victory thanks to the hard work and determination of the entire team.
Manager Steve Cunningham had a headache with many key players absent. Sam Baird was still injured, while Sean Newton was only fit enough for the bench.
In the end, the defensive duo of Luke Burke and Josh Doherty shone, with Louis White also stepping in to help at left-back. Despite the chaotic formation, the Ashton players appeared cohesive and disciplined from the opening whistle.
Just two minutes in, Enoch Lusiama immediately set hearts racing with a volley that forced the keeper into a desperate save.
Not to be outdone, Mikey O’Neill and Alex Byrne also tried their luck. Byrne even almost scored when his shot hit the post! The Robins completely dominated the first half.

The second half started off hot. O’Neill’s quick attack created an opportunity for Lusiama, but goalkeeper Roberts was again the obstacle. Several consecutive chances from Daniel and Okyere also failed to break through the opponent’s defence.
The deadlock was finally broken when Darius Osei showed his skill as he received a pass from O’Neill, Osei demonstrated his physical strength and excellent finishing, sending the ball into the corner of the net. Ashton finally took the lead 1-0.
Not to be outdone, six minutes later it was Enoch Lusiama’s turn to score. From a throw-in, the ball fell to O’Neill, whose shot went wide. But then, Will Tomlinson and Alex Byrne combined to deliver a perfect cross, which Lusiama met with an easy tap-in. This was his third goal in the last four games, a great achievement for the young player.
Ashton continued to attack aggressively, with Tomlinson, Osei, and O’Neill trying to add to the score, but the game ended at 2-0.
In addition to their sharp attack, Ashton’s back line were equally solid. Eastham was the hero on several occasions with important saves, including denying dangerous chances from Thornhill and Okyere in the final minutes.
Thanks to this victory, Ashton United climbed to 11th place in the Northern Premier League table—a positive step after a period of inconsistency.
