After their triumphant thumping of the Fife Flyers the night before, Manchester Storm yielded to the Cardiff Devils in a flat-footed outing, writes James Gabriel De Castro.

Playing away from home, the Storm struggled for majority of the match as they lost 3-2 against the aggressive Cardiff Devils.

The scoreline does not reflect how exhausted a side the Manchester Storm were against the Welsh-based sub-zero squad.

The Storm just accounted for 30 shots, with 16 of those shots being directed at the goal, a far cry compared to the 72 shots of the Devils, with 34 shots of those being directed at the goal.

Coming out of the faceoff, the Devils started out strong. Pushing the pace and sustaining it until they almost scored a goal in the first minute. However, it was overturned as seen in the replay, the Devil’s player motioned as if he was kicking the puck in to the net.

As the game went on, Manchester Storm created a goal by playing out of their defense. Their first goal came in from a scrappy play by Nick Welsh.

Welsh put a long forward pass to the opposite side of the rink to a wide-open Gary Haden, who beat Christian Stoever one-on-one for the first breakthrough of the match.

Coming into the second intermission, Manchester Storm was sloppy and slow to adjust to the pacy game of the Cardiff Devils to open up the second intermission.

This domination continued in the 34th minute as a power play started by Brandon Estis. Estis passed it to Brett Perlini, who found an underlapping Cole Sanford, who snugs the puck in the top corner for the Devils’ first power-play goal of the season. Equalising the game at one a piece.

After the goal, Manchester Storm tried to counter in the hopes of regaining the lead. However, after the Storm lost possession, the quick transition of Riley Brandt caught the Manchester-based sub-zero squad sleeping.

Brandt connected a beautifully timed pass to a wide-open Evan Mosey, who put the puck in the back of the net.

In the third and final period, Manchester Storm tried to play with more urgency. Putting up more shots and challenging the goalkeeper more in the early minutes of the third intermission. The defence of Christian Stoever held up and kept the game from being interesting earlier on.

In the dying embers of the game, the Devils climbed into the driver seat.

Kaleb Ergang came out of the box after his two-minute penalty and tried heroically to dispossess Brandon Estes, but to no avail. The puck was quickly recovered by Kolin Olischefski, who scored an individual goal to make it 3-1 in the 54th minute.

The last heave for Manchester Storm to salvage the game came in the 59th minute power-play, where it was capped off by Kaleb Ergang, making it 3-2.

This loss for the Storm makes it their second of the season. Their next match would be on a Friday, November 7, to kick-off a back-to-back game starting away from home against the Nottingham Panthers, followed up with a meeting on Saturday, November 8, at home against Coventry Blaze.
