Salford City endured a difficult afternoon at the SMH Group Stadium as they fell to a 2–0 defeat against Chesterfield in League Two. The Ammies came undone by an unfortunate own goal from Oliver Turton and a late strike from Ronan Darcy, writes Resky Rahmat.

Chesterfield delivered a commanding performance to overcome Salford City 2–0 in their latest League Two encounter, a result that showcased the home side’s resilience and tactical discipline. On a blustery afternoon at the SMH Group Stadium, both teams started cautiously, feeling each other out in a midfield battle that offered little space or time on the ball.

Salford looked to break on the counter, while Chesterfield maintained possession and probed for openings without much success in the early stages.

The first half ended goalless, but the momentum gradually began to shift toward Chesterfield after the interval. Their attacking intent grew clearer, and the pressure finally paid off just past the hour mark. In the 62nd minute, disaster struck for the visitors when defender Oliver Turton inadvertently turned a low cross into his own net, handing Chesterfield the breakthrough they had been pushing for. It was an unfortunate moment for Turton, who had otherwise been solid in defense until that point.

The goal injected belief and urgency into the home side, while Salford struggled to recover from the setback. Chesterfield began controlling the tempo, winning duels across the pitch and forcing Salford deeper into their own half.

The Ammies’ attempts to push forward were met with organized defending and quick counterattacks from the Spireites, who smelled blood as the game entered its final phase.

Their persistence was rewarded again in the 83rd minute when Ronan Darcy sealed the result with a well-placed finish past the Salford goalkeeper. Darcy’s composed strike capped off a fine performance and ensured that Chesterfield would take all three points. By then, Salford’s resistance had faded, and the visitors could do little to mount a late comeback against a confident home side.

For Salford City, the defeat will sting — particularly given how competitive they were for large portions of the game. Yet, fine margins proved decisive, with one unlucky own goal and a late lapse in concentration making the difference.

Chesterfield meanwhile, managed to show their skills and what they are capable of as they strive to make a mark in the league competition.
