Lerone Murphy eager for Volkanovski showdown amid uncertainty

Alexander Volkanovski and Lerone Murphy clash over potential featherweight showdown, writes Lanz Sievert.

Volkanovski has hinted at possible complications for his planned December clash with the fourth-ranked featherweight contender, Murphy.

Murphy, who is on a three-fight UFC win streak, has openly sought a big-name fight to climb the featherweight ranks. The 34-year-old is coming off a victory with a highlight reel knockout of Aaron Pico.

Facing Volkanovski would be his biggest test yet, while offering the ex-champ a chance to rebound against a dangerous but less proven foe.

However, recent comments from “The Great” suggest things are not set in stone just yet.

Murphy responded immediately, reaffirming his desire to face the Australian. He said:

“He didn’t say no to me. I think he is referring to the date. I will be ready whenever. Let’s wait and see!!”

The reigning UFC featherweight champion recently reclaimed his 145 lbs title with a victory over Diego Lopes in April.

The specifics behind Volkanovski’s uncertainty are unclear. The main sources could be scheduling issues for UFC December cards, pending medical clearances, or unexpected opportunities arising for either fighter.

For now, Murphy’s patience keeps him the frontrunner, whether the bout takes place in December or later, as a Sydney bout in February is also on the card, and might entice Volkanovski to hold off a bit longer.
