Luke Findlow’s stoppage-time header helped Prestwich Heys knock out Stockport Town from the Macron Cup in style and extended their unbeaten run to six games.

Heys stunned the hosts to win 3-2 in the first round game at Stockport Sports Village on Saturday afternoon. It was their first encounter with the home team since a 1-1 draw in the league back in August at the same venue.

The visitors came from 1-2 down at half-time to seal the victory. Takura Sambizi gave a positive start for Heys as he scored his second goal in two consecutive games. This one came in the sixth minute of the match by tapping in Bryson Appleton’s cross from the right flank. Stockport didn’t take long to bounce back, as they went on the hunt for goal.

Jack Atkinson successfully lobbed the ball over Heys’ keeper Austyn Hall to level the game four minutes after Sambizi’s opener, followed by Joshua Fowles’ strike in the 19th minute to give the hosts the lead.

But Heys were back into the game 30 minutes into the second-half after Appleton culminated his great run with a shot into the corner, and Stockport goalie Josh Schofield could do nothing about it but watch the ball sail past.

The match would be decided by penalties if the score remained tied, but Heys fought hard to make sure it didn’t happen, and they found the net for the third time at the final stages.

Rob Worrall’s free kick from the left in the 95th minute found Findlow, whose header managed to clinch Heys’ fifth win in six matches. This victory takes Heys to the second round, and they will travel to play Ramsbottom United on Saturday, 11th October.

It means the sides will meet three times in the next five weeks, with a league fixture at Ramsbottom on Saturday, October 4, before the return at Adie Moran Park on November 1.
