Wigan Athletic fell to a heavy 4-1 defeat in a derby clash against Bolton Wanderers at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, writes Baraa Mohammed.

Despite a sold-out away end making the short trip with high hopes, their efforts went unrewarded on a day where the hosts were simply too strong in League One action.

Wigan fired up the derby with genuine energy, thoroughly testing their Bolton’s defence and racking up with several corners in the first quarter of an hour. But their brilliant initiation remained largely unproductive as the game went on, and The Wanderers took control of the flow.

Bolton found their rhythm, and the goals began to fly in.

Thierry Gale broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, and the hosts quickly made it two through Marcus Forss five minutes later.

The Wanderers then scored a crushing third just before the break when Mason Burstow hammered his strike in off the post.

Bolton picked up right where they left off in the second-half as Forss capitalized on a short header back to goal to score his second and Bolton’s fourth.

Despite that, the Latics exhibited a bit of resistance and they could only manage a brief respite of joy, which occurred at minute 54, when Paul Mullin got the ball into the net with a fantastic curling shot to put the game to 1-4.

It is a great pity that they lost the match, still, they are most probably going to come back stronger, consider the mistakes made, and take the right lessons from this match as they get ready for their next game.
