We take a look back at some of United’s most famous goals, writes Bethany Gwilliam.

Many goals stand out in history books, but which ones are some of the best known?
Here is a look back on some of the best goals that have happened in a Manchester United shirt.

August 17, 1996:

David Beckham shot to stardom after his incredible goal against Wimbledon FC.
At just 21 years old he made his mark in the history books and put himself on the map, leading him to become the man we all know to this day.

In the game, Manchester United were leading two nill.

Beckham made contact with the ball in his own half, before sprinting towards the halfway line. Neil Sullivan, the keeper, was standing off his line and a young Becham took the opportunity, kicking the ball towards the goal.

The ball went straight over Sullivan’s head and into the net.

April 14, 1999:

In April, 1999, Manchester United went up against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final.
The rivalry is viewed as one of English football’s greatest fixtures.

The score was nil-nil in extra time, with one minute of injury time remaining.

United were down to ten men, when suddenly, Giggs saw an opportunity and went for it.
A misplaced pass from Arsenal saw Giggs weaved through four defenders before striking for a goal.

Only a handful of games can match what the 30,223 people saw that day.

February 12, 2011:

In a Manchester United Derby against Manchester City in 2011, Rooney scored one of the greatest goals of his career.

In the 78th minute Rooney showcased a spectacle of a bicycle kick, giving Manchester United a 2-1 victory.

It was later voted as the greatest premier League’s goal in the 2012 Seasons Awards Ceremony.

December 21, 1996:

On December 21, 1996 Manchester United took on Sunderland.
On this day, Eric Cantona made his way into Manchester United’s folklore.
Cantona got the ball just before the halfway line and then passed it to Brian Mcclair.
Striding towards the edge of Sunderland’s penalty box, Mcclair passed him back the ball, and Cantona made an eccentric chip over the goalkeeper.

Elation followed as both he and the crowd celebrated.
