The Manchester Originals’ performance in The Hundred 2024 season has been disappointing so far, writes Akshat Arora.
Currently, they sit at the bottom of the standings, having lost all five of their matches.
Their campaign began on a rough note with a significant defeat against Welsh Fire and they haven’t recovered since.
This performance was followed by consecutive losses to Trent Rockets, Southern Brave, Northern Superchargers, and Oval Invincibles.

The Manchester Originals faced Welsh Fire at Old Trafford and suffered tremendously in their first encounter.
They were bowled out for a low total of 86/8 in 100 balls, despite playing at home. Jamie Overton and Scott Currie, who scored 23 and 26 runs respectively, made significant contributions.

These, however, proved in vain as Welsh Fire easily chased the target in a mere 57 deliveries. The story has been the same in the other games as well, with them failing to play together as a unit and either the batting or bowling department failing to execute plans to put the opposition under any sort of pressure.
This has resulted in a few close defeats as well as easy victories for the opposition.

A significant disappointment for the Manchester Originals has been their batting lineup, which has repeatedly failed to post competitive totals.
The absence of their skipper Jos Buttler has been keenly felt in the top order, as none of their openers have given any sort of explosive start to relieve some pressure off their struggling middle order.
Starman and stand-in skipper Phil Salt has had a poor season, scoring only 97 runs at a strike rate of 127.63.
Some changes saw Matthew Hurst open the batting and score consecutive half-centuries, striking at a rate of almost 170, but the lack of support from the other end substantially affected the team’s overall performance.
Despite some strong individual efforts, the bowling unit has struggled to defend the low scores effectively, further compounding their challenges.

On a brighter note, Matthew Hurst and Phil Salt have shown encouraging signs of form with the bat and are expected to continue scoring runs consistently.
Their contributions at the top of the order have provided the team with crucial starts, allowing the middle-order batters to settle in and build a strong platform for bigger scores.
However, to turn around what has been a challenging season for the Originals, someone from the middle order will need to step up and deliver consistently.

Fazalhaq Farooqi has been a key performer in the bowling department, often taking early wickets with the new ball.
Despite his efforts, the team has struggled to maintain pressure in the middle overs, with the spin department proving expensive and allowing the opposition to score freely.
This lack of penetration in the middle overs has been a significant issue, making it even more difficult for the Originals.

The team will need to regroup and address their issues if they hope to turn their season around.
With matches still left to play, they have opportunities to climb up the standings.
Their next encounter against the London Spirit will be critical as they seek to register their first win of the season.
