In a dramatic turn of events, Newark Town’s aspirations for promotion were dashed — despite a spirited late comeback in Nottinghamshire.
The Blues succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Harrowby United in the United Counties League Division One play-off final.
The match, held at the Newark Sports Village, drew an impressive crowd of 983 spectators, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Jake Frestle makes a save for Harrowby United in the UCL Division One play-off final against Newark Town.
Harry Allcock’s double strike for The Arrows was the game-changer, even as Ryan Smith’s late header rekindled hope for the Blues.
However, when the final whistle sounded, it was Harrowby who had secured their spot in step five.
The match was evenly poised at the outset.
Newark, having finished third in the league, had previously triumphed over Dunkirk 3-2 in their semi-final. Meanwhile, Harrowby, who finished fifth, had delivered a resounding 4-1 victory against second-place Clipstone.
The first half was a tense affair with few clear-cut chances.
The Blues were presented with an opportunity to take the lead in the 20th minute when Newark captain Lewis Chambers was fouled by Tom Harris.
Despite outfoxing goalkeeper Jake Frestle, Chambers’ penalty kick narrowly missed the crossbar.
The visitors struggled to create opportunities, with the Newark defense effectively neutralizing their long free kicks.
In retaliation, an ambitious 20-yard shot from Chambers was easily saved by Frestle.
Just as the first half seemed destined for a deadlock, Harrowby’s Allcock delivered a shock to the hosts.

He connected with Anderson’s cross to send a powerful header past Eddie Cooper in the dying moments of the first half.
The Blues responded in the second half with George Asplin’s low free kick testing Frestle. However, Allcock soon doubled United’s lead with a superb solo effort.
The hosts rallied, with Saw Wright probing the Harrowby defense from the left flank.
His curling efforts, however, failed to find the back of the net. Subsequently introduced, Ryan Smith saw his header saved and a left-footed shot miss the target.
In a rare respite from the Town’s onslaught, Cooper produced the save of the match, parrying Gurney’s drive wide. Appeals for a second penalty were dismissed after Jackson Buckthorp was seemingly fouled.
With just over five minutes remaining, the hosts found a lifeline. A lofted ball into the box was deftly controlled by Asplin, who then chipped it over the crowd of Harrowby defenders.
Smith was on hand to head the ball into the net, reducing the deficit.
However, the equalizer remained elusive, with Frestle adeptly intercepting any through balls into the Harrowby box.
The match was a testament to the spirit of both teams and a thrilling spectacle for the fans. Despite the result, a spokesman from the club said that Newark Town will be looking to build on an excellent season in their next campaign in their quest for step five football.
