Today marks ten years since a football match commemorated a historic match played between the trenches on Christmas day in 1914 during WW1

A football club has chosen to commemorate a football match that took place on this day (August 22 2014) ten years ago.

“Ten years ago today, Newark Town Football Club departed early morning London Road Car Park and travelled through France to Belgium where on the Sunday they played FC Emmendingen in a centenary game,” said a spokesman from The Blue.
“The game took place to remember the match played between the trenches on Christmas Day back in 1914.”

The resulting match saw local side FC Emmendingen defeat Newark Town 4-1.

“A photograph and letters were uncovered in the archives of Newark Library showing that a Soldier William Setchfield from 28 Northgate Newark had been in Belgium on Christmas Day 1914,” continued the spokesman.

“The 1st Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, William’s Regiment and a Saxony Regiment had met in no-mans land between the barbed wire and trenches had exchanged gifts and had participated in a game of football.

“The photo enclosed shows the captain of Newark in 2014, Lewis Poole, and FC Emmendingen’s captain on the very spot near Messines, Belgium, where that now well documented gathering happen in 1914.

“This was a wonderful trip and an experienced that will be remembered by all who participated.”
